The Future of Genetically Modified Food essays Genetically modified food has been a topic of much debate ever since it was first introduced to the market in the early 1990s. Safety issues and economic as well as ecological concerns have been raised by many. While it is evident that there was a food supply issue the question is whether genetically modified food, or GMF, can solve world hunger problems, or even if that would be the best way to address the issue. Nina Fedoroff argues in her New York Times article "Engineering Food for All" that as food prices continue rising so does the number of people who may not be able to afford higher priced food. Unnecessary regulation by the EPA, Department of Agriculture, and Food and Drug Administration has slow down improving technology to allow for faster production of GMF. Evidence and extensive research over the past 25 years has shown no danger in producing modified crops. Fedoroff wants to see regulation lifted and a simple set of requirements focused on any hazards posed by gene Michael Pollan's view of gene modification is different. He argues that GM may be much more dangerous than people think and refers to it as biological pollution. Diversity of corn could be threatened by genetic engineering by allowing the modified organisms to end up in places they weren't meant to be and where no one would suspect they would go. Contamination by cross-pollination and trans-genes could replace genes that Extinction of these genes is very possible. Pollan is a professor of journalism at the University of California, Berkeley. Pollan has written a book called The Omnivore's Dilemma which describes four ways human society obtains food and follows each process to its source. It was a shock and grief emergency, and experts say the trauma will go on for months and years. Some people are already discussing rebuilding on the site in lower Manhattan, but who will want to have an office to do business on a mass grave? It was a political emergency, and the government mobilized. It was an intelligence emergency--why didn't we know enough to prevent it? It was a religious and spiritual emergency--how can we understand the purpose of death and destruction on this scale? It was a patriotic emergency-- how do we respond to an "Attack on America?" It was a peace and justice emergency--do we have a repertoire of response that does not take the form of violent retaliation and retribution? It was a democracy emergency--how do we preserve our principles in adversity? It was a tolerance and understanding emergency--how do we keep from turning against people from other religious and cultural groups, ethnic groups and nationalities that we identify with the criminals, the enemy?

Education of a child starts from the family and mother is the first teacher. But, the irony in India is that although the deity of education is a female i.e. Goddess Saraswati according to the Hinduism, innumerable number of women are illiterate. They are not remaining uneducated by their own wish but they are being forbidden from receiving education because of the patriarchal families in our society. Right from the early Vedic period people have been celebrating the birth of a son, but in those days daughters born into a family were not neglected and educated properly. However the scene was changed during the later Vedic Age and the daughters were considered as a social burden. Only the girls belonging to upper class families enjoyed the right of education and got proper nourishment. In medieval period the conditions deteriorated for the females and even in royal families, girls could not get the same status as the boys. In Muslim households they were taught at their homes while Hindu girls enjoyed the privilege of getting primary education along with the boys in schools. The prevalence of child marriage were excessively practiced. However, in the nineteenth century many social reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, Annie Besant, M.G. Ranade, Jyotibe Phule, Swami Dayanand Saraswati etc. came forward for the emancipation of women in India. Especially Raja Ram Mohan Roy advocated for female education. Since then there has been tremendous progress in every field but unfortunately still the girls are neglected. In most of the families the birth of a girl child is not desired and if accepted they are thought inferior to boys and their education is not considered important because it seems a wastage of money to most of the parents. they think it unreasonable because afterwards they have been compelled to bear a heavy amount towards their dowry. So the female literacy is rate is unsatisfactory and it has a direct impact upon the overall development of a nation and its population growth. If India wants to be one of the developed nations it must concentrate on female education because if we educate a man we educate an individual but if we educate a women we educate an entire family. Again the root cause of all problems facing the women is related to education. if all women are educate, then all problems like female infanticide, dowry, female suicides, domestic battering, malnutrition of women, child marriage and other related atrocities would get vanished from India. Education provides an essential  qualification to fulfill certain economic, political and cultural functions and improves women ‘s socioeconomic status. At very age and level education enhances the intellectual, social and emotional development of women and enables them to meet their basic needs to daily life. It brings reduction in inequalities in the society. Only educated women can understand the needs of the family. They will never send their children to work in any shop or factory, rather they will arrange for their education in good schools. They will take proper care of the health and diet of their children. A mother knows what is good for her kids and how they should be brought up. Thus, educated mothers would promote education for all their children without discrimination. But if a mother (girl) is not educated and gets children then she would do anything without reasoning and harm herself and her children. As she is not educated, she would tend to think that education is only for the mail and not for the female and thus, she would ingrain in her daughters the idea that they are inferior to their brothers. As girls are not educated they remain dependent on their family before marriage, on their husband after marriage and on their children after the death of their spouse. This is the main reason for the unpleasant condition of women. So if girls will be educated, they will no longer be dependent on any one and they can do a lot for their uplift. Most of the problems of society can be eradicated by educating the girl child. marriage at a very young age leads the women to conceive repeatedly, which affect their health badly. Most of the uneducated women do not know about the various contraceptive measures. Even if some know they feel hesitant in using them. It results in more growth of population and worse condition of women. Thus, the state in which female literacy rate is more like Kerala, population growth is less. The menace of child labor also has significantly been out of practice because the women became aware of their rights and privileges. Women are exploited in every sector, especially if they are uneducated, because they cannot demand their rights. Most of the women lack unity and work in unorganized sector. If they were educated they would have been knowing the rules and regulations and working in an organized sector getting the benefits of public schemes. If women are educated enough they can get training for setting of small scale industries, they can know the procedure of getting loan, get the knowledge of market availability of raw material and labor,  new policies of the government, procedure to register new product and knowledge about import and export goods. If their standard of living will be improved. it will indirectly uplift the level of society. If they can be financially strong they will take proper care of their children and provide them good education. According to Mahatma Gandhi, â€Å"Due to her nature women possesses the best ability to teach the child†. Chhatrapati Shivaji and Maharana Pratap are the best example of this saying. In this essay, I will analyze how the writer uses setting and horizontally to explore the major themes in the novel, which are also the essential issues that arise in the particular social context of his time. Fitzgerald sets the story in his contemporary society, an era known as the Roaring Twenties when the post-war America was experiencing an unprecedented financial boom. Despite the economic prosperity of the upper class, Fitzgerald criticizes the moral decay of the Americans such as the prevalent superficiality and materialism in The Great Gatsby.When Myrtle Wilson reappears after her first encounter with Nick, Fitzgerald writes ‘Multi he influence of the dress her personality had also undergone a change†. The writer reveals Myrtle superficiality through her dependence on appearance to seek confidence. Her shallowness is shown or her emotion is easily affected by materials like shirts. Her love for either Gatsby or Tom is also doubtful as she hesitates between the two out of consideration tha t which can provide her a rich, classy life. Using the first person narrative, Fitzgerald criticizes the moral decay and worship of materialism in his contemporary society through Nick's voice. After Myrtle's death, Daisy leaves Gatsby to take the blame and flees with Tom. Nick calls the Buchanan couple â€Å"careless people† who â€Å"smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast airlessness. Fitzgerald shows his own contempt towards those who think money can fix everything and take no responsibility for their acts through Nick's disapproval of Tom and Daisy, the typical of that kind. However, through Nick's voice, Fitzgerald reveals the society's doubtful attitude towards women's success rather than recognition when he writes â€Å"l (Nick) heard some story of her too, a critical, unpleasant story. As the words â€Å"critical† and â₠¬Å"unpleasant' connote negative attitudes towards Jordan Baker, Fitzgerald shows the bias towards women even whey they were trying to achieve certain kind of independence such as pursuing a professional career. Furthermore, when Nick comments on Cordon's cheating in her first game, â€Å"Dishonesty in a woman is a thing that you can never blame belly†, it ultimately shows the society lower expectation of women and hence a subservient role that they were expected to play.This is different from the real trend in the 1 sass America society where women's achievement was more recognized and their individual rights were also addressed. In fact, female characters in The Great Gatsby are mostly submissive and dependent on males. For example, when Nick first visits Daisy, Fitzgerald describes her and Jordan as â€Å"anchored balloon. † This simile shows the hollowness of the two women and how they are empty-minded just like a balloon†. Worse than the purposeless drifting like a balloon, they are â€Å"anchored† and not able to leave according to their own will.This shows a loss Of freedom of these two Women. Fitzgerald also writes ‘they Were both in white†. As the color white connotes weakness and paleness, it shows the incapability of the women to take control of their own lives.
